Advisory
Committee
Primarily composed of friends and colleagues of Paul
Monette, the Advisory Committee includes representatives of literary,
scholarly, archival, and activist pursuits within the LGBT communities.
The volunteer Committee is responsible for annual research and recommendation
of honorees to the Trustee in order to fulfill the mission of the
Monette-Horwitz Trust. The Committee regrets that it is unable to
consider solicitations for award consideration.
Chris Freeman has a Ph.D in English from Vanderbilt
University. He is co-editor of the Lambda Award-winning The Isherwood
Century as well as Conversations With Christopher Isherwood
and the forthcoming Love, West Hollywood: Reflections of Los
Angeles. He lives in West Hollywood and teaches at the University
of Southern California.
Eric Gutierrez is the author of Disciples
of the Street: The Promise of a Hip-Hop Church (Seabury Books).
Writing on the nexus of religion, politics and culture his commentary
has appeared in the LA Times, Newsday, The Jerusalem Post, The
Advocate, Out, and Tu Ciudad and on radio, including Air
America and Progressive Talk AM. He teaches in the Critical Studies
Department at the California Institute of the Arts.
Bernice Horwitz, the mother of Roger Horwitz,
holds an honorary position on the Advisory Committee.
Dan Luckenbill, on staff at UCLA Library,
recruited and processed Paul Monette's papers. Luckenbill's stories
appeared in gay liberation journals and his Christopher Isherwood
memoir appeared in the Lambda Literary Award-winning The Isherwood
Century. He is secretary of the Board of Directors, ONE Institute
and Archives, Los Angeles.
Elizabeth Nonas, author of screenplays, novels,
and short stories, is Associate Professor in the Cinema, Photography,
and Media Arts Department at Ithaca College where she teaches screenwriting
as well as writing videogames and immersive media.
Lisa Powell is an activist and attorney in
Los Angeles. She is co-founder of United Lesbians of African Heritage
(ULOAH).
Mark Thompson is the author of several books
on gay culture and history, including Gay Spirit: Myth and Meaning,
cited by Lambda Book Report as "among the 100 books that
changed our lives." A journalist and Senior Editor at The
Advocate for 20 years, he is currently touring an exhibit of his
photographic work, "Fellow Travelers: Liberation Portraits," around
the nation. In May 2008, Thompson and his longtime partner, Malcolm
Boyd, were given Pioneer Awards by the Lambda Literary Foundation
for their lifetime achievements in activism and the arts.
Winston Wilde is the surviving lover of Paul
Monette. He is a sexologist and psychotherapist in Beverly Hills. He has recently published Legacies of Love: A Heritage of Queer Bonding.
Terry Wolverton is the author of six books:
Embers, a novel in poems; Insurgent Muse, a memoir;
Bailey's Beads, a novel; and three collections of poetry: Black
Slip, Mystery Bruise, and Shadow and Praise. In
a former life, she was the Executive Director of the Woman's Building;
she is the founder of Writers At Work, a creative writing center where
she teaches workshops in fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry.
She is also Associate Faculty in the MFA Writing Program at Antioch
University Los Angeles.
